On the day my first grandchild was born, March 2, 2012 (day 603) I wrote this haiku in his honor. Then, the next day, I found myself writing another haiku about him, beginning it with the final line of the previous haiku. As longtime readers of these haiku will know, this suggested that a haiku sequence needed to be done, and I dutifully obeyed the impulse.
Here is the complete sequence that eventually came out over five days of Haiku Diem. I dedicate it to Bjorn Freeman Bloodgood.
the same world
except what was born
in the night
in the night
the great gusts that spoke
a new name
a new name
for ‘day’ and also
everything
everything
that can fit within
the child’s eyes
the child’s eyes
open wide upon
the same world
